Sociology Sexual Orientation Discussion The Hawaii Legislature passed a bill in 1994 affirming marriage as intended for "man-woman units" capable of procreation (Collins). This statement is inadequate of a reason in my opinion, and is definitely worded incorrectly as many marriages involve partners not capable of procreation. The defining of procreation as well as what is meant by units is something to be explored when evaluating this legislative language."My sister cant say she is a Lesbian," said Dimitris Lambrou.

"Our geographical designation has been usurped by certain ladies who have no connection whatsoever with Lesbos," he said (30, Apr.). I found this statement interesting as well as the entire article because it makes some very interesting points related to the island, the population and the actual use of the word lesbian. In reading the various articles on sexual orientation what I found most confusing was the disparity between rules and opinion governing same sex relationships. While the attitude and opinion against same sex relationships are clearly shown in the case of the high school prom (Byrd), attitude is more veiled in the Illinois adoption bill (Nair).

Many gay and lesbians keep their sexuality secret in response to the environment, opinions and attitudes around them. Using symbolic interaction gays and lesbians often base their behavior and secretiveness on this. Thinking on a very basic level that their sexual orientation would be disapproved of shapes and forms the way the individual will behave. Self-evaluation is often based on those opinions making the individual feel that they are much different than others. Relationships are defined according to the level of comfort the gay individual feels with revealing their true sexuality to another.
